Jamie Whitcher (Bournemouth Cycleworks-Vitec Fire) proved quickest on a time trial bike at the New Forest CC 10-mile Boxing Day time trial, while Poole Wheelers were celebrating a festive 1-2-3 in the road bike category.

Brett Wheeler clocked 22-42 to prove quickest on a road bike, just five seconds ahead of team-mate Sam Wadsley, while they dominated that podium with Dan Newman clocking 23-10 to take third fastest road bike.

Army Cycling’s Jasmine Holmes was fastest on a time trial bike with 25-52, 29 seconds ahead of Abigail Barnes (Total Tri Training) with third being Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers’ Naomi Shinkins (Sotonia CC).

GS Stella’s Michelle Lock was quickest female on a road bike with 31-39, 37 seconds better than runner-up Janine Pattison (Zoom Triathlon Club), while the top tandem was Sotonia CC’s Mary Corbett and Malcolme Cox of VC St Raphael who completed the course in 32-16.

Whitcher clocked 20-02 to prove a convincing winner of the time trial category. That was one minute and 48 seconds better than anyone else with Joshua Clark (Royal Navy and Royal Marines CA) being second in 21-51 and Petersfield Triathlon Club rider Peter Younghusband being third with 22-23.

Fastest road bike rider, Brett Wheeler said afterwards: “The course was great, almost pan flat, and we got lucky with the weather - a cool temperature with little wind.

“My plan was to stick to a good watts number and average speed and it worked out perfectly, taking the win by five seconds from some very strong competition.

“And to top it off Poole Wheelers went 1-2-3 which was a great end to 2023. I’m looking forward to racing more in 2024.

It was my first New Forest time trial and I really enjoyed it. The event was really well run and everything was very relaxed and the organisers were great.”

Prizes ranged from some Muc-off kits to boxes of chocolates, with reach category winner going home with an additional chocolate medal! Ten riders chose fancy dress, with prizes also given out for the best dressed too.

Fastest female Jasmine Holmes added: “I entered the race as a bit of fun around the Christmas period. The atmosphere at the HQ and on the course was very festive with lots of people wearing fancy dress.

“I was really happy to finish first female but also happy to not let my boyfriend, James Meakin, catch me as he started only three minutes after me, which I just about managed to do!”

And Jamie Whitcher said: “I’ve always enjoyed doing a TT on this course, I've been riding it since I was young so I know every bump.

“I really appreciate a TT being run at this time of year as it's always a good benchmark mid-winter to see how you're doing and a flat draggy out and back is perfect for this. It’s always a really good event, I look forward to next year!”

Michelle Lock

The event used the popular P311 course which begins to the south of Ringwood in Hampshire and heads south on the B3347 to Sopley for the turn for home.
