VTTA (Kent) 10

Christopher Fennell (The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz) recorded a season’s best time on his way to winning the VTTA Kent 10 by over one minute, while Kate Thomas (Lewes Wanderers CC) was the women’s winner.

Fennell, aged 27, covered the out and back 10-mile course in a time of 18 minutes and 28 seconds to take his seventh win of the season.

The Q10/1 sees riders start near Orlestone heading out north on the A2070 out to Ashford. On the return leg competitors headed back past the start before exiting the A2070 at Johnson’s Corner and then a final leg to the finish before north towards Hamstreet.

Fennell has already won the National 25 and 50-mile Championships this season but failed to finish the National 100-mile Championships on his last outing, but returned with a bang on this occasion.

Nicholas Fennell (Thanet RC) led the charge behind and was once again runner-up to his brother completing the course in 19-37.

A further 10 seconds behind was quickest veteran on scratch Kevin Tye (VeloRefined Rule 5) finishing third (19-47).

Tye was just 13 seconds quicker than fellow veteran and team-mate Stuart Hourigan who was a close fourth overall in 20-00.

Spindata had predicted a win for Fennell in 18-41 but on a good day for times the multi-time national champion knocked 13 seconds off that prediction.

In the women’s event veteran rider Thomas recorded a winning time of 22 minutes and 45 seconds – an average speed of over 26.37 miles per hour.

On her last outing Thomas was also victorious in the Horsham Cycling 10 and she added another win to her collection.

Under-23 rider Hannah Graveney (AWOL O’Shea Worx) finished second clocking 24-31 while quickest juvenile Abbey Thompson (Stonham Barns Park – SYRT) completed the women’s podium positions in 25-57.
