South West District Sporting Championship

Steve Lampier (Kernow Racing Team) broke a 14-year-old course record on his way to winning the Tavistock Wheelers 25, while Cassandra McDowall (Tavistock Wheelers) was fastest woman.

Tristan Kelsall-Spurr (Exeter Wheelers) was quickest road bike and finished fourth overall, while Lindsay Hobbs (Tavistock Wheelers) was the quickest woman.

Former road professional Lampier, aged 40, is making a comeback on ‘limited training’ but recorded a winning time of 55 minutes and 34 seconds on the undulating S5/25S course.

Starting and finishing outside Tavistock the course sees competitors head out and back along the A386 to Okehampton, on the western edge of Dartmoor National Park.

Tavistock Wheelers hosted the event which incorporated the South West District's 25-mile Sporting TT Championships.

The previous course record was held by Sean Childs who set 56-22 in 2010.

Conditions were perfect for the event with a dry, warm and cloudy day after early morning rain. There was very little wind which also helped contribute towards fast times. 

Lampier took a fine victory and also picked up the veteran's standard adjusted medal. 

Under-23 competitor James Pearcy (Mid Devon CC) came home second, also beating the former course record mark, posting a time of 56-16.

Completing the open podium positions was Okehampton's Lloyd Copp who came home in 59-01.

The team prize went to Tavistock Wheelers' with Michael Buckley (1-01-09), Nathan Woodhouse (1-04-07) and Tony Symons (1-05-55).

“It was ideal conditions for quick times,” said Lampier. “Taking the win wasn’t in the forefront of my mind as I’m making a comeback on limited training time.

“I was more thinking about finishing quickest veteran as I didn’t think that I would beat James Pearcy.

“Sean Childs was prolific winner so to take a record off him is pretty cool. It’s a really hard course, on the outwards leg there is a lot of climbing and long drags.

“The way back is also deceptively hard and is longer.”

The women’s event saw Tavistock Wheelers riders McDowall and Hobbs compete for top honours and bragging rights.

Time trial competitor McDowall took the open and veteran female medals in a finishing time of 1-19-39.

Road bike rider Hobbs picked up the open and veteran female road bike medals after recording a time of 1-28-38.

Exeter Wheelers rider Kelsall-Spurr took his second open road bike victory in as many events in a time of 59-03.

Blake Pond (Nopinz) was the only other rider to break the hour mark finishing in 59-45, while Callum Orchard (Launceston Velo) was third (1-01-15).

Former age group World Champion Robin Delve (Mid Devon CC) took the veteran's standard adjusted medal for road bikes after posting a time of 1-05-21.
