Penzance Wheelers CC 29

Beth Berriman and Steve Lampier came out on top at the Penzance Wheelers time trial in Cornwall, which was due to be a 29-mile event but ended up around 12.5 miles on a shortened course with roadworks blighting the original course.

Veteran Lampier, riding for Kernow Racing Team, clocked 29-18 to take an easy victory by 2-39 from his junior team-mate Thomas Tregear who was on a road bike, while third fastest was Nigel Polkinghorne (Duchy Velo), another 40 seconds off the pace set by former pro Lampier.

“It was nice to get the win, even though the event was shortened due to roadworks it was still a great race,” said Lampier.

“It was contrasted by the predominantly fast leg from Sennen to Penzance, then the uphill slog to near St Ives which fortunately we only had to do once!

“My form is building, after getting back on the bike ten weeks ago after a few years off, it’s nice to support my first ever cycling club’s events with my new team, Kernow Racing Team.”

Berriman was similarly well clear of her rivals in the female category.

The Penzance Wheelers veteran clocked 38-27 which was two and a half minutes better than second female Rose Willis, the St Austell Wheelers veteran.

Third quickest female was on a road bike, Lindsay Philp of PDQ Cycle Coaching clocking 42-24.

“It was a great way to celebrate my 45th!” said Berriman.

“The shortened course was still challenging, it just meant putting more effort down from the go. It is a hard course, but then I think that makes it more interesting because you have to keep pushing yourself without ever getting a steady pace.

“The course had a nice little rise at the end. I went fast into it, then a little sprint uphill. That was a good finish given the full course couldn't run because of roadworks.”

The event was originally using the S53/29 course starting near Sennen and completing two laps of a circuit heading out towards Penzance and back round to St Just. But roadworks meant riders completed just one circuit, missing out the part with roadworks towards the end.
