Hamish Armitt (Project 1/Barrow Central Wheelers) enjoyed a near-perfect time trial debut with success in the open category at the Velo Club Glasgow South 10-mile time trial on Saturday morning, while Victoria Smith maintained her unbeaten run with a win in the women’s event.

Having only previously competed on the road at the 2023 National Hill Climb Championship where he placed sixth on The Struggle, 21-year-old Armitt produced a stunning ride to finish more than a minute clear of the field in 20-06.

In second place was Glasgow University CC rider Finn McHenry in 21-19, while a time of 21-53 saw Craig Patterson of Vanelli-Project GO take third place.

“It was an OK ride,” said Armitt. “I was a bit off on my power, I’m still just getting used to the position. It was a tough course with crosswinds mainly so it was hard to try and get tucked up.

“This is the first year I’ve started racing on the bike. I was an elite runner in the past, but now I’m riding for a British elite development team Project 1 who have supported me in getting into time trials.”

In the women’s event, Alba Development Road Team’s Smith took pole in 25-11, beating Jude Paterson (RT 23) who clocked 26-54, while a time of 28-12 saw Paterson’s clubmate Elizabeth Wisdish into third place.

Quickest female road bike also went to RT 23 rider Wisdish in 28-12, with Emma Rogerson of Glenmarnock Wheelers runner-up in 29-35.

On her win, Smith said: “VC Glasgow South put on a fabulous event, despite some very challenging weather conditions!

“It was useful bike handling practice in powerful cross winds. Incredibly grateful to all of the organisers and volunteers standing out in the weather conditions to run this event for us!”

Rod Leach earned the crown as fastest road bike in 23-31, ahead of Ian Morton who set 25-41, with Vincenzo Severino third in 25-51.

The event was held on a windy day meaning a strong crosswind with rain, hailstones and sunshine also in the mix typical Scottish weather.

This event has previously been run on the WW10/02 course which starts just south of Newton Mearns and heads onto the A77 southbound past Glenouther Moor until reaching the roundabout just before Fenwick Moor where riders turn and follow the route back northbound to finish in the same place as the start.

However, organisers changed the route slightly this year due to a change in road layout which made it harder for riders with a tough undulating course that is reflected in the times which are on average a couple of minutes slower than the usual flat drag strip.
