The Doyenne of British Time Trialling
First run in 1906, the iconic Shaftesbury Open 50 is one of the monuments of the UK Time Trialling scene.

This year the E9/50 in Essex will play host to the Shaftesbury Open 50, it is a fast sporting course with a great road surface. The course was used in 2023 for the RTTC National 50 to great success.

One of the oldest events in the TT calendar, the event is the current host to the competition record, set by Marcin Bialoblocki in 2018. Prior champions include names such as Hutchinson, Cammish, Dawson and many more.

In 2022, Team Bottrill did the double, winning both the mens and womens events courtesy of Tom Hutchinson, fresh from his efforts in the Sub7 Ironman, and 2022 women's BAR champion Kate Allen.

The "Shaftesbury Centenary Trophy" has been awarded to the winner of the open 50 every year since 1988. Since 2023 the award is jointly awarded to the fastest competitor in both the open and female classifications. Claire Emons was the first, winner of the female classification after winning the 2023 event. Current holders are Liam Maybank and Chantelle Coetzer.

David Halliday and Chantal Coetzer

David Halliday claimed his second win of the season at the Shaftesbury Cycling Club 50-mile time trial in Essex on 20 July 2025, posting 1:50:16 for Team Bottrill. Chantal Coetzer was the quickest woman with 2:17:59 for Hainault Roads Club in this historic Essex time trial event.

Open Category Highlights and Results

Halliday followed his Velo Club Baracchi 10 win on 5 May with another strong ride, beating Daniel Legg (North Hampshire Road Club) by over three minutes. Kevin Baumber (Shaftesbury CC) completed the podium.

Halliday said: “I was pleased to win this morning’s race as the Shaftesbury 50 has been running for a long time, with past winners including some legends of the sport, so it’s great to get my name on the trophy alongside them! My ride was a bit mixed, I had a few issues in the first lap that cost me some time, but I stuck at it and had a strong finish, so was pleased overall. Luckily the rain held off until the last 30 minutes or so, when the wind seeming to pick up too. Shaftesbury Cycling Club events are always extremely well run, so thanks to Phil and all the volunteers.”

This ride, Halliday's first 50 of the season catapults him into 3rd place in the Traditional BBAR open standings
