Junior records fall as Grogan and Rees prove quickest at Rav

Oliver Rees was quickest at the Ravensthorpe CC 10-mile time trial in West Yorkshire on Sunday, while Beth Grogan was quickest female in the event near Fairburn.

Meanwhile, the junior course record was broken twice on the day despite somewhat windy conditions.

Joseph Turnbull (Team Bottrill) was first to break the old junior mark of 23-32, but his time of 21-22 only stood for a matter of minutes, with James Beagley (Harrogate Nova CC) bettering it with a time of 21-10.

Those impressive performances were enough to give Beagley second spot and Turnbull third, with Oliver Rees (Holmfirth CC) taking the overall victory in a time of 20-59.

In the women’s category Selby CC’s Beth Grogan came out on top with 24-59 for ninth overall, while second fastest female was Gretchen Zoeller (Born to Bike-Bridgtown Cycles) in 26-23.

In the road bike category Ravensthorpe CC swept the podium with Angus Owen clocking 23-39 for the win while team-mates Joseph Healy and Steven Fisher were second and third respectively.

And Ravensthorpe also provided the fastest female on a road bike with Kathryn Argyle’s time being 30-03. Meanwhile, Calder Clarion pairing Ben Hancock and Anthony Sedgwick were top two-up in 22-41.

This was not the first time this season Beth Grogan has tasted victory in an open time trial, having been the fastest female at the VTTA Yorkshire 10 in March, the Yorkshire CF 10 on the same course two weeks later, and the City Road Club Hull 10.

She will be aiming to emulate her winning performances in two weeks when she is due to ride the Yorkshire RC 25 and the Selby CC 10.

This was Oliver Rees’s first open time trial of the year and comes after a 2023 in which he rode just one time trial, the Sowerby Sunday Club 10 which he also won.

The event used the V910 course which begins north of Brotherton and heads up over the A1 to near Kippax before turning for home.
