In-form Critchlow wins Epsom 10, Carpenter first female
Angela Carpenter

Victory in the Epsom CC 10-mile time trial near Bentley in Hampshire went to Andy Critchlow (Paceline RT) while quickest female was Angela Carpenter (a3crg).

In-form Critchlow – who went on to break the course record at the Sussex CA 50 on Sunday – began his double winning weekend with a time of 19-09 in the Epsom CC event.

That gave him the win by 1-23 from Stuart Hourigan (VeloRefined Rule 5), while Petersfield Triathlon Club veteran Peter Younghusband was third, another 18 seconds back.

In the women’s category, Carpenter clocked 22-03 to finish as fastest female in convincing style with runner-up Becca Lewis (BellaVelo CC) finishing in 25-41 and Alexa Forbes (London Dynamo) third female.

The event used the popular H10/8 course on the A31 Bentley Bypass, beginning to the east of Bentley and heading down to Holybourne and back.

Andy Critchlow

This was Critchlow’s sixth victory of the season in open time trials, coming after his win at the Eastern Counties CA 50-mile Championships last month, while his other wins have included the Southern Counties CU 10, the Sussex CA 25 and 10 and the Farnborough and Camberley CC 25 back in April.

Having ridden and won the Sussex CA 50 today, his next ride is scheduled to be the National 100 in two weeks.

“It was the first time I’ve ridden the H10/8 course and with the road surface quite rough in places I think a short 19 was a decent time,” said Critchlow.

“I’m really pleased to finish the first half of the season with two wins this weekend as I have been struggling for a week with a bit of sickness and felt my form was starting to drop.

“I’m now taking a break from the bike to freshen up before building again for the second half of the season and my main target races at the National 25 and 10, also the UCI World Masters.”
