Maldon & District CC 22

There were wins for Paul Turton and Louise Robinson at the Maldon and District CC hilly on Sunday, staged on the E21/12 course near Woodham Ferrers in Essex.

Turton, the 50-year-old who rides for Team Vision Racing-Silverhook, clocked 47-27 to win by 1-19 from Southend Wheelers’ David Pennington, with Espoir Connor Backhouse (Kingston Wheelers) another minute further back in third.

Also a veteran, Louise Robinson (Essex Roads CC) clocked 53-11 to win the women’s prize by a convincing 7-31 from the promoting club’s Karen Aylen, while Cambridge CC rider Ann Shuttleworth was third quickest woman.

Turton’s win is his first of the season but comes after he clocked 21-46 for seventh spot in the Hart Performance Coaching Spring Classic 10-mile event last weekend.

He is due to ride the VTTA Kent 10 next Saturday and is then hoping for a ride in the East Anglian VTTA 25 Road Bike event on April 9.

This was Robinson’s first open time trial of the season, after being a non-starter at the Hart Performance Coaching Spring Classic 10 last weekend, but she is sure to feature in events throughout the next few months.

A popular early season event, the Maldon and District CC hilly has been cancelled for the last two years because of the pandemic, but last time it was run in 2019 it was an 18-mile event and Louise Robinson was the fastest female.
