Wainman conquers strong winds to win Harrogate Nova TT

Joel Wainman (SSLL Racing Team) powered to victory in the Harrogate Nova CC 24-mile time trial, staged on a wind-swept V262 course near Ripon in North Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon.

The 42-year-old from Hull – who won the previous week’s Veterans TTA (North Midlands) 14.7-mile event – clocked 53.32 to take the win by 52 seconds from Bronte Wheelers’ Steve Ayres, while Christophe Demoulin (York Cycleworks) was third, another 28 seconds back.

First and only female in the event was Jean Croft from the promoting club, who did well to cover the course in 1:15.11 and take 32nd overall.

Wainman was ahead at both time checks taken at the end of the two laps of the V262 course. He was three seconds quicker than Demoulin at the end of the first lap with Ayres third, but Ayres stepped up his ride to take second spot, after completing the second of the circuits almost a minute quicker than his first.
