Tom Rigby

Tom Rigby earned a second successive win after triumphing at the Preston Wheelers 25-mile time trial in Lancashire on Sunday morning, with Debbie Moss taking the prize in the women’s event.

Riding for Croston Velo, Rigby lived up to his billing as pre-race Spindata favourite and backed up his win at Southport Cycling Club 15-mile time trial on April 21

He clocked 54-48 to see off competition from Matt Morris (Wigan Wheelers) who took the runners-up spot in 55-19, while a time of 55-55 helped Team ASL-Bolton rider Mark Parsons to third place.

“It was a new course but in familiar (windy) territory across from Preesall to Cockerham then North towards Lancaster and back,” said Rigby.

“I tried to save energy where I could for the drags and the worst of the headwind. It was tough going in places but I was pleased to come away with the win. Thanks to Preston Wheelers for a well organised event.”

In the women’s event, Deborah Moss (Springfield Financial Racing Team) won in 1:03-52, ahead of North Lancashire Road Club pair Sue Cheetham and Janice Davies who clocked 1:10-52 and 1:22-22 respectively for second and third place, with Davies also finishing as fastest road bike.

On her win, Moss said: “It was a tough ride this morning. This was a new course, and it is sort of a course of two halves, the start is flat and then it gets a bit lumpy from Cockerham up to Lancaster.

Debbie Moss

“There was a stiff north-westerly wind to contend with, tailwind at the start and then it was hard up to Lancaster when you turned into it then a horrible stretch across Pilling sands to the finish where it’s quite open and exposed.

“There was also a set of temporary traffic lights to contend with, Gethin had organised timekeepers to record stops and this worked well.

I was very glad to see the finish timekeeper!

“It was a nice, friendly local event, thanks to Gethin and everyone involved with organising and running the event.”

This event, run on the L2534 course, starts at Preesall on the B5270 and heads southeast until reaching the junction with the A588, where riders turn left and continue northeast through Stakepool, Cockerham and Conder Green then at the roundabout return along the outbound route to finish just before Preesall.
