Toby Tanfield started his 2024 season with success at the Cleveland Wheelers 21.7-mile time trial on Sunday, while Cleveland Wheelers club-mate Kate Sanderson finished as fastest female.

Tanfield clocked 45-37 on his first CTT time trial in a year to finish 80 seconds ahead of runner-up Marcel Schubert (Darlington CC) who set 47-12, while the final spot on the podium went to Toby Simpon of Team Bottrill in 47-37.

Leadout Performance rider Ross Turner crossed the line in 48-36 to take fourth place and fastest road bike, with Cleveland Wheelers rider Rob Carter narrowly edged into second place, two seconds back in 48-38 and Adam Pinder (Teesdale CRC) taking third place in 52-14.

On his success, Tanfield said: “I'm happy with the result.

“The conditions weren't ideal - quite windy - with more time spent into a headwind than tail, and lots of time in side-winds. I'm glad a picked the shallower 50mm front wheel!

“This was the first test of the year with my new and improved position, so it's great to see I'm definitely going in the right direction and have the knowledge to know how to improve from here.”

There was more success for the promoting club in the women’s time trial as Kate Sanderson took the top prize in 1:03-02, comfortably ahead of clubmate Annabel Sill in 1:07-36, while third place went to Deborah Jennings (Mannila Cycling) in 1:19-04.

Sanderson said: “I was very happy with how it went - always good to get the first event of the season done.

“The wind didn't seem as bad as forecast - or was more favourable direction wise so  there was less slogging into headwind than expected. It was a PB for me which is always nice on a home event - credit to the Cleveland Wheelers support.”

This event, run on the T211R course, is a looped circuit that starts just west of Stokesley and heads west to Rudby before riders turn southwest bound through Hutton Rudby and onwards to turn northeast at Swainby until reaching Stokesley, where another turn southeast to Great Broughton and then Ingleby Greenhow before curving up northbound to complete the loop and finish east of Stokesley.
