Marcel Schubert

Marcel Schubert (Darlington Cycling Club) was the only rider to break the 20-minute mark as he took victory by over a minute in the Yorkshire VTTA 10, while Sue McFarlane (Army Cycling) was equally as impressive on her way to winning the women’s event.

Schubert, from Darlington, took his 11th win of the season recording a winning time of 19 minutes and 26 seconds.

The 41-year-old has had almost a month out of open time trial action after finishing fourth in the National 100-mile Championships on his last outing on July 10.

Conditions were fast on the outward leg between Dishforth and Thirsk along the A168.

However, there was a bite in the tail on the returning leg as a stiff breeze on the finishing drag meant only Schubert averaged over 30 miles per hour to break the 20-minute mark.

A minute behind was local man Darren Yarwood (Chapeau! Vive Le Velo) who led the charge for second stopping the clock in 20-25.

Teesside registered Ryan Hall (Adept Cycling) completed the podium positions taking third spot in 20-43.

Spindata had predicted a victory for Schubert in 19-17 but the wind conditions resulted in his actual time being nine seconds slower.

Schubert took the best veteran on standard on the day with +6.44 with Matt Hill (Velo Club Godalming & Hasleme) taking second spot with +6.42 just two seconds from the win.

Best Yorkshire rider on standard was Tim Garwell with a +6.36 representing local town club Otley CC.

Michael Allen (Team Jewson - MI Racing ~Poly Allen) was also quickest veteran aged 70-79 on scratch in 23-54, while Stuart Wells (Lindsey Roads Cycling Club) was best veteran 50-59 in 20-56.

Army rider McFarlane took the women’s honours posting a winning time of 24 minutes and four seconds.

The 42-year-old veteran rider finished fourth in the a3crg Glorious Goodwood 10 on her last outing but was a clear winner on this occasion.

Chasing her home was fellow veteran Karen Taylor (Team Sportslab) who was also quickest age group rider 50-59 stopping the clock in 25-18.

In the veteran women’s 60-69 age group Liz Ball (Valley Striders Cycling Club) was the quickest recording a time of 25-44.
