Rising stars George Peden (Team PB Performance) and Abi Smith (Moonglu CC) took the men’s and women’s victories in the VTTA Yorkshire 25.

Peden, aged 22, took his second victory of the season clocking a time of 46 minutes and 57 seconds.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Smith was equally as impressive in the women’s event with her time of 53-50 which was good enough for fifth overall.

The V236/1 saw riders complete two laps of an out and back course starting near Topcliffe traveling along the A168 past Thirsk, turning at Thornborough and then making the return journey.

Peden also won the Darlington CC 25 last month and was once again victorious finishing some four minutes and 41 seconds quicker than his nearest rival.

Veteran Darren Yarwood (Chapeau! Vive Le Velo) led the chase behind finishing second in 51-38 which was 37 seconds quicker than Aiden Adams (Harrogate Nova CC) (52-15).

The veteran age group winners on standard were: 40-49 Richard Dean (Trek Sheffield) +13.14; 50-59 David Leckenby (VTTA Yorkshire) +13.22; 60-69 Russ Richardson (Teesdale CRC) +17.29; 70-79 Peter Greenwood (Clayton Velo) +17.00

In the women’s event Smith clinched victory on her first open time trial outing of the season and her winning time was three minutes and 28 seconds faster than her nearest rival.

Josie Smith (Trek Sheffield) finished second in last weekend’s Vive Le Velo 10 and was again runner-up in a time of 57-18.

Finishing in third overall was Beth Grogan (Selby CC) 1-03-09.

“It was the third time I’ve done that course and 50 seconds faster than before so I was really pleased,” said Smith.

“It showed my hard work has been paying off. The wind was in a slightly weird direction which made it difficult to judge.

“I just tried to hold a constant power and kept really low and all the aerodynamic things you’ve got to think about when the speed is high.”

Quickest veteran on scratch was Sue McFarlane (Army Cycling) taking fourth in 1-03-54 who was also best veteran 40-49 on standard in +8.42.

Sandra Burrows (Drighlington BC) was best veteran 50-59 on standard with +8.04.
