Marcel Schubert

Veteran rider Marcel Schubert (Darlington Cycling Club) took a convincing victory by almost two minutes in tough conditions at the VTTA (North)/Cleveland Coureurs 10, while Caroline Ratcliff (Ferryhill Whs) won the women’s race by a single second.

Scratch rider Schubert, aged 40, battled the cold and windy conditions to record a winning time of 20 minutes and eight seconds – one minute and 44 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

The win was Schubert’s seventh of the season over a mixture of distances as he prepares for the National 50 and 100-mile Championships later this month.

Starting near Crathorne in north Yorkshire riders competing out and back along the A19 down to Cleveland Tontine before making the return journey.

Last weekend Schubert won a round of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series and he was again victorious on this occasion.

Ryan Hall (Adept Cycling) led the battle for second covering the course in 21-52 which was 15 seconds quicker than Russ Richardson (Teesdale CRC).

The quickest junior was Kieran Brownless (Teesdale CRC) recording a time of 27-27.

Richardson, aged 65, saw his time of 22-07 equate to a veteran on standard winning time of +6.23 ahead of Schubert (+5.58) while David Nichol (Ferryhill Whs) was third (+5.23).

The women’s event could not have been closer with Ratcliff posting a time of 26-17 which was a single second faster than Sarah Foulds (Velo Culture).

Meanwhile, Erica Short (Darlington Cycling Club) finished third in a time of 33-35.

The win was Ratcliff’s fourth of the season after also beating Foulds in the Hartlepool CC/VTTA (North) 10 last month.

Ratcliff was also the quickest veteran woman on standard with the 57-year-old’s time equating to +3.52 ahead of Foulds (+2.20).
