Paul Burton

Paul Burton (Paceline RT) took victory by just 10 seconds in the …a3crg Good Friday 10, while Jennifer George (The Independent Pedaler - Nopinz) was a clear winner of the women’s event.

Veteran rider Burton had to push his limits to fend off a host of challengers with the top six riders separated by 31 seconds.

However, the 40-year-old, from East Horsley, was not to be denied clocking a winning time of 18 minutes and 50 seconds.

With few events being held on the fast A3 this year a full field took to the start for the Easter event.

The P881/10 saw riders start near West Liss before quickly joining the A3 which runs through the Longmoor Rangers before turning at Liphook and making the return journey.

The early cool conditions did not hamper riders with 20 riders went going under the 20-minute mark with seconds difference in it for placings.

Burton also won the Redhill CC sporting 18 in February and was in fine form to take his second victory of the campaign.

Scratch rider Ben Williams (GS Mossa) was on his first outing of the season and despite being just two seconds behind his personal best of 18-58 on the same course last season he was narrowly beaten by 10 seconds.

Completing the podium positions was Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) in 19-13 just six seconds faster than Simon McNamara (HuntBikeWheels.com) in a close finish.

Spindata had predicted that Burton would be the victor of the starters in 19-06 but in reality, he went 16 seconds quicker.

Best male veteran on standard was host rider Justin Webb whose time of 19-21 equated to +7:51.

Host club …a3crg won the team award with Justin Webb, Neil Mackley and James Fawcett the counting riders.

In the women’s event last starter George started her season in winning fashion recording a winning time of 20-46.

George finished third woman in the National 50-mile Championships last season and showed she will be one to beat again this season.

Veteran rider Lisa Davis (Drag2Zero) led the battle behind finishing second in 21-59 while Marianna Holt (Fareham Wheelers) completed the podium positions (22-39).

Spindata had predicted a win for George in 20-41 but on her first outing of the season she was five seconds slower.

Best veteran on standard was Sarah Mathews (…a3crg) whose time of 23-04 was quick enough for fourth on scratch and equated to +7:35.

An event was also held for those without an open 10-mile time trial result or haven’t ridden an open 10 in the last three years.

Sam Greenwood (Norwood Paragon CC) took victory in a time of 22-42 which was 14 seconds faster than Hamish Walker (…a3crg) 22-56 while Stewart Harrison (Kings Lynn CC) finished third (24-30)
