Josie Smith (Trek Sheffield) made it four wins on the bounce taking the women’s victory in the Sowerby Sunday Club 10, while Bevan Jones (53eleven) won the men’s event by four seconds.

Smith, from Barnsley, recorded an average speed of over 26.2 miles per hour on her way to clocking a winning time of 22 minutes and 51 seconds in the women’s event.

The V210 saw riders start near Dishforth in Yorkshire before competing out and back along the A168 to near Sowerby before making the return journey.

Smith, aged 36, has hit form after also winning the Drighlington BC 10 on the same course earlier this month in 22-28 but in slower conditions she was happy with winning despite being 23 seconds slower this time out.

“It was quite a windy day and the finish was pretty hard,” said Smith.

Bevan Jones

“There was a bit of a crosswind on the way back and then the last leg was really hard with a tough headwind into the final drag.

“It’s the slowest time I’ve done (this year) on that course so that shows it was quite hard as I was hoping to go a bit faster but I was happy with the win.

“That course attracts good women’s fields which is good as well.”

Sarah Lewthwaite provided a challenge for Smith in the women’s event finishing second 25 seconds down in 23-16.

Meanwhile, a tight battle for third place saw Beth Grogan (Selby CC) finish in 24-13 which was just 20 seconds faster than the time of Maria Mulleady-Kershaw (Trek Sheffield) who stopped the clock in 24-33.

In the men’s event Jones, from Brigg, recorded a slender victory recording a winning time of 20-25.

Jones was made to work hard for his victory as veteran rider Darren Yarwood (Chapeau! Vive le Velo) finished just four seconds behind in second place.

The battle for third was also a close encounter with fellow veteran Andrew Miller recording a time of 21-05 which was just 24 seconds faster than his Chapeau! Vive le Velo team-mate Neil Cleminshaw.

The win was Jones’ third this month after successful rides both City Road Club (Hull) & Vive le Velo 10-mile events.

Meanwhile, quickest junior was Will Trevor (Jem Hadar Racing) who completed the course in 24-43.
