John Wingfield (Team HUUB) snatched victory by just nine seconds in the Eastern Counties CA 25-Mile Championships, while Laura Davies (Orwell Velo) won the women’s event.

Wingfield finished fourth in the National Road Bike Championships earlier this season, and won his second event of the season in a time of 48 minutes and 15 seconds.

The F2A/25 saw riders start outside Cambridge before heading out and back along the A428 past Cambourne before making the return journey.

Competitors were greeted by a good day with an ideal north easterly wind direction, though it was blustery at times.

Wingfield won the Team Milton Keynes 20 on his last outing (43-20) and continued his winning form finishing nine seconds faster than his nearest competitor.

Veteran Neil Harris (Southborough & District Wheelers) was an early starter out of the 130 finishers but held the fastest time of 48-24 before late starter Wingfield bettered his mark.

Harris come into the event in good form after winning the East Sussex CA 25 but had to settle for second this time out.

Fellow veteran Paul Pardoe (Peterborough CC) came into the event unbeaten with four wins to his name but saw that record ended finishing in third (49-11).

The women’s event was also a close contest with Davies putting in an impressive performance to win in 54-38.

Davies came into the event with a 25-mile personal best of 58-46 but she smashed that mark by over four minutes to take victory.

Her impressive personal best also won Davies the handicap time competition.

The 26-year-old also won the Velo Club Baracchi 10 in a personal best time of 21-56 and continued her form to take another victory.

Jennifer Millmore (Team LDN) pushed Davies all the way for victory but had to settle for second this time out clocking 54-47 while Lara Thomas (Stowmarket & District CC) was third    (55-51).

Louise Robinson (Essex Roads CC) was the quickest veteran on scratch completing the course in 56-15.
