Ward WheelZ

Ward WheelZ broke the stranglehold of Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling on the RTTC National Team Time Trial Championship beating their rivals by 39 seconds, while Brother UK - Team OnForm won the women’s event.

Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling have won the last two editions of the team time trial championships but saw their reign come to an end.

The Ward WheelZ team consisting of Tom Ward, William Perrett and Rob Walker recorded a winning time of 49 minutes and 24 seconds over the 27.2-mile distance.

The AS/9 saw teams complete on the out and back of the dual-carriageway A46 in Nottinghamshire and then finishing on the A6097.

Ward, Perrett and Walker combined to finish third in the National Team Time Trial last season in Scotland but on more familiar roads they were not to be denied recording an average speed of over 33 miles per hour on their way to victory.

The Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling trio of Simon Wilson, Zeb Kyffin and Oliver Peckover led the chase behind but had to settle for second this time out in 50-03.

Completing a formidable podium was the Saint Piran trio of Ross Holland, Michael Gill and Ollie Hucks who were another 30 seconds down in 50-33.

Winning team member Ward said: “It was warm and the sun was poking through the clouds but there was a fair bit of wind too.

“It was a tailwind for the first few miles, then 13 miles into the wind, and it was a tough drag. The run to the finish was quite fast though.

“We rode it well together. We’ve beaten a couple of good strong teams in Ribble and St Piran, we knew we would be up there as we finished third last time, but you never know what’s going to happen.”

Team-mate Perrett added: “I’ve done a couple of 10s on these roads before including last weekend, and I only live in Nottingham so it’s fairly local for me.”

Reigning women’s champion CAMS Racing were non-starters along with Team Kirkley Cycles leaving only Brother UK - Team OnForm to compete.

The Brother UK - Team OnForm trio of Jess Carridge, Laura Pittard and Daisy Barnes were worthy winners completing the course in one hour and 26 seconds.

Pittard said: “We rode well as a team so we’re pleased, especially as we haven’t ridden as a team before like this.

“We knew we could do around the hour, but we were just focussed on doing our best rather than a specific time. We just wanted to do a constant speed, and we achieved that.”
