William Perrett (Ward WheelZ) and Gretchen Zoeller (Ilkeston Wheelers) were fastest male and female riders respectively at the Melton Olympic 25-mile time trial in Nottinghamshire on Saturday afternoon.

The Derby-based 25-year-old made the most of a warm afternoon with only a light breeze, covering the course near East Stoke in 46-13 and winning by 1-37 from Rose Race Team’s in-form Jack Levick, while Mapperley CC’s Ian Guilor was third in 50-19.

And in the women’s category it was Ilkeston CC rider Gretchen Zoeller who took victory. The 42-year-old from Nottingham clocked 1-05-54 to win by 3-31 from Coalville Wheelers’ Andrew Winkless whose team-mate Pam Moore completed the podium with 1-10-39 for third.

Guilor was the fastest veteran on standard, the 54-year-old’s time giving him a plus on age standard of 18-33 which was 38 seconds better than the runner-up in that category, Chris Dyason from Cambridge CC, while just two seconds slower was Peterborough CC’s Malcolm Smith.

The quickest team of three was the Welland Valley CC with Matt Plews, Alex Smith and Adam Robinson combining for a combined 2-54-52.

The A25/34 course begins near East Stoke and heads out onto the A46 heading south west. They pass the north of Bingham and go down almost to Cotgrave before turning back up and finishing north of East Stoke.

This was Perrett’s first open time trial of the year so far, with his last CTT event being the National 10-Mile Championship where he clocked an impressive 20-18 to finish second behind Chris Fennell.

He is due to be in action next at the National Team Time Trial Championship at Gunthorpe, also on the A46 in Nottinghamshire, riding in a trio with Rob Walker and Tom Ward.

Zoeller’s ride was only the fourth on her CTT record, but shows she is better over longer distances. She rode the Coalville Wheelers 10 back in February and was second behind Winkless by almost a minute and a half on that occasion. But in this 25-mile event she was more than three minutes quicker.
