Amy Loftus

Amy Loftus and Matthew Cole were crowned winners of the National Youth Championship at the Mallory Park circuit on Saturday, while Team Bottrill were crowned the team winners.

Loftus, the 16-year-old who rides for East Bradford CC, covered the 10-mile course in 24-11 to win the girls title by 21 seconds from Mabli Phillips (Maindy Flyers CC) with Jess Pickavance (Team Royal London 360-Isle of Man) was another 13 seconds back in third.

And in the boys event 16-year-old Team Bottrill rider Matthew Cole clocked 20-23 to win by 11 seconds in a new personal best time, leaving High Wycombe CC rival Cormac Nisbet second, with his Team Bottrill colleague Lucas Jowett taking third in 20-47.

With Oliver Peace clocking 21-41 for eighth overall, Team Bottrill were the fastest trio of riders and secured that title.

The event on the closed circuit was organised by Race Rapid on behalf of the Midland District Committee and saw age awards handed out to young male and female riders aged 12 and over.

A healthy entry of 119 riders entered the event, having qualified through district heats over the last few months.

Cole powered to victory in the Teesside DC heats in July in a time of 21-03, while Loftus was a wild card entry having suffered a mechanical in the Yorkshire DC heats and been a non-finisher.

Her time at Mallory was also a personal best.

Boys runner-up Nisbett was victorious at the London West DC heats back in June, completing the distance in 22-13 on that occasion.

And 13-year-old Mabli Phillips secured her place in the finals by virtue of a win at the South Wales heats in May, where she clocked 25-45.
