John Brearley (Squadra RT) took victory by a single second in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 10, while Claire Jessop (Otley CC) was a clearer victor in the women’s event.

The men’s result could not have been closer with Brearley’s winning time of 21 minutes and 22 second just a second quicker than veteran Keith Ainsworth (Sheffrec CC) while the top five riders were separated by just 28 seconds.

The V212 saw riders start south of Boroughbridge before completing an out and back course down to Walshford along the A168, which runs adjacent to the A1 in Yorkshire.

Brearley, aged 33, from Hull, had finished second in the City Road Club Hull 25 and Vive Le Velo 10 and finally clinched the elusive victory on this occasion.

Veteran Ainsworth was also looking for his first win of the season after two fourth place finishes in July but had to settle for second a single second back in 21-23.

Just eight seconds behind the winner was veteran Julian Ramsbottom whose time of 21-30 was good enough for third place.

Juvenile rider Joseph Turnbull (Otley CC) covered the course in 22-20 which saw him take seventh overall.

Meanwhile, veteran rider Jessop, aged 51, from Ilkley, took victory in the women’s event recording an average speed of over 23 miles per hour on her way to clocking 26-02.

On her last time out Jessop was pushed into second in the VTTA (North)/Hartlepool CC 50 but went one better on this occasion.

Fellow veteran Liz Ball (Valley Striders Cycling Club) was the only other women’s competitor placing second in 27-11.
