Kate Palmer powered to a second victory in the space of a few hours, while Oliver Hurdle improved on third spot in the morning event by taking the win on Mill Hill, Shoreham, in Brighton Mitre CC’s event on Saturday afternoon.

Palmer (1904 RT) clocked 9-27.45 for the 4,682-yard climb giving her the women’s prize by around nine seconds from the morning’s runner-up Bethan Male, while another 14 seconds back was Olivia Webb (Eastbourne Rovers CC), also repeating her placing in the morning (see separate event report).

Hurdle (Stolen Goat Race Team) – who was also victorious in Brighton Mitre CC’s Mill Hill in 2020 – was securing his second victory on 2021, with the first coming in the New Forest CC 33-mile time trial back in May.

In hill-climbs his only other ride this year was in the VC Venta Old Winchester Hill climb last month, when he was second.

His time of 8-03.62 have him the win by around two seconds from Matt Sumpton (Dulwich Paragon CC) who had also finished second in the morning event on Bostal Road. Third went to Richard Cartland (HuntBikeWheels.com) who was another 14.5 seconds off the pace.

Prior to Saturday Palmer’s only other hill-climb appearance this season was in the Kingston Wheelers climb of Leith Hill last month, where she placed third behind reigning national champion Bithja Jones and top talent Madeleine Heywood.

Next Saturday she tackles the East Sussex CA climb in the morning and the Butts Lane climb in the afternoon.
