Tracey Williams was fastest female at the Sussex CA 25 in West Sussex, while there was a tie in the men’s event between Matthew Smith and Simon McNamara.

Smith (Team TMC) and McNamara (HuntBikeWheels.com) both clocked 54-46 for the G25/49 course near Loxwood, while Smith’s team-mate at TMC - and twice winner of this event -  Steve Kane was third with 55-26.

With Nik Allen finishing fifth in 57-12, TMC also won the team prize.

After Saturday’s 10-mile event promoted by the same team, Bank Holiday Monday’s 25 was run off in less sunny conditions, with dense cloud and cooler temperatures being welcome but a northerly breeze less so.

Challenging road surfaces caused added problems with pot holes having been due for repair for a long while, and with the course being on minor roads and including as 12 per cent hill on each of the two laps, it certainly gave riders something to think about.

Williams (Brighton Excelsior CC) covered the course in 1-13-21 to finish as only female.

The road bike category was won by Luke Burgess (Horsham Cycling) in 59-35 which was a personal best and his first sub-hour performance, almost two minutes better than his nearest rival Pete Morris (Team TMC).

In other categories, Cris Coxon (Brighton Mitre CC) clocked 56-07 and was quickest 40-44 veteran, with McNamara being the top 45-49 rider in 54-46. Nik Allen won the 50-54 category, with the 55-59 prize going to Adrian Blacker (VTTA Surrey Sussex) in 59-51.

David Shepherd (a3crg) was top 60-64 rider in 59-06, Chris Lord (Brighton Excelsior CC) was best 65-69 in 1-02-52, and Don Parker (Brighton Mitre CC) clocked 1-09-18 to win the 70-74 prize.

Mike Marchant (Southdown Velo) won the hub gears’ 25 in 1-17-39 - his sixth such win in the last 11 years.

Dave French (Weybridge Wheelers) was denied a further win by a puncture with five miles left, leaving Marchant to win on a Moulton bike with its usual 20 inch wheels which he has painstakingly renovated in the last two years.

Talking of start timekeepers, Clive Walton, Redmon CC again officiated and obliged with brewing some excellent teas at the event HQ afterwards to the acclaim of riders.
