Karen Aylen and Samuel Asker were fastest female and male riders respectively at the Essex Roads CC 10.2-mile time trial near Saffron Walden in Essex on Saturday.

Aylan, the 50-year-old Maldon & District CC rider, covered the E1/10a course in 25-47 to win the women’s category by more than a minute from Dulwich Paragon CC rival Delyth Williams, with Jan Harvey (Southend Wheelers) another seven seconds back in third.

And overall victory went to Richardsons-Trek RT rider Samuel Asker, the 20-year-old talent from Bury St Edmunds. His time of 21-46 was 52 seconds better than runner-up Paul Turton (Team Vision Racing).

Meanwhile, there was a tie for third spot between Keith Dorling (Team Bottrill) and Daniel Ryan (North Road CC) who both clocked 22-40.

Woolwich CC duo Alex Pearson and Nick Elson were the fastest two-up with a time of 21-29, giving them victory in that category by 43 seconds from Bedfordshire Road RT pair Matt Donovan and Ian Woodcock.

The promoting club’s own youngster James Wicks set a new juvenile course record with a time of 25-04, which gave him 13th overall.

In the handicap competition overall victory went to Asker again with a handicapped time of 16 minutes exactly, 19 seconds better than James Wicks in second and Stewart Fung (Redbridge CC) in third, 1-24 behind Asker.

Starting north of Wendens Ambo, the E1/10a course heads north up the B1383 London Road through Littlebury and Great Chesterford to the turn at Stump Cross before heading back south.

Mainly a road rider, this is Asker’s first open CTT time trial since May 2018 when he was part of the winning quarter at the CC London four-up 25-mile time trial.

But Aylen is somewhat more prolific at riding time trials than Asker. She was victorious in the Maldon & District CC 10-mile time trial in June, and placed second in the Lea Valley CC 10, the Eastern Counties 10 Championships on June 26, the ECCA 10 on June 6, the Maldon & District CC 25 and the West Kent CC 10 in April.

She will be hoping to continue her good form at the ECCA 15-mile event next Saturday.

Essex Roads CC were due to run a 25-mile event on the Sunday, but this was postponed until August 25.
