Alexander Royle (Manchester Bicycle Club) set a new course record on his way to victory in the Southport Cycling Club 10, while Deborah Moss (Team Merlin) won the women’s event.

Royle, from High Peak, in Derbyshire, clocked a new benchmark time of 19 minutes and 43 seconds on the D33/10 course just one second faster than the previous mark.

The 27-year-old also won the VTTA Yorkshire 25 earlier this season and this was his second victory after being narrowly denied on other occasions.

The D33/10 saw riders start near Tarleton before heading out and back along the A565 past Mere Brow before turning for home at the roundabout with Gravel Lane.

Under-23 rider Connor McKinnon (Dolan Ellesse) led the chase behind setting a new course record for his age category of 20-09 to take second overall.

A good day for Manchester Bicycle Club saw Scott Burns finish third overall a further three seconds back in 20-11.

Meanwhile, the winning team was Liverpool Century RC with Daniel Stevens (21-02), Sam Hughes (21-45) and Jamie Pleavin (22-44).

“I was pretty pleased to deliver that effort,” said Royle.

“It was a course I’ve not ridden before so it was good to go over new roads. My team-mate (Scott Burns) also placed third so it was pretty successful all around.

“I’m starting to find my legs after a slow start this year. I had a good winter so I have been a bit disappointed with my results so far so hopefully I’m coming good.

“I have a mini target of the National 100 so I’m hoping to go better over the longer stuff this year.”

Also setting a new course record was quickest juvenile Reuben Corlett (Birkenhead North End CC) in 23-26 while fastest junior was Adam Tattersall (Innovation Racing) in 21-21.

Fastest veterans on standard were: veteran 40 - Jason Bateman (VTTA North Lancs and Lakes Group) +6.00, veteran 50 – Malcolm Horner (Warrington Road Club/Horton Light Engineering) +5.42, veteran 60 – Kenneth Addison (Southport CC) +5.19, veteran 70 - Maggi Briggs (Team Bader Amputees) +4.37, veteran 80 - Alexander Munro (SVTTA) +4.19.

Meanwhile, Rob Rix (Southport CC) won the Handicap Trophy with the 73-year-old clocking a time of 29-07.

Veteran rider Moss recorded another victory in the women’s race clocking a winning time of 22 minutes and 35 seconds.

Last weekend Moss was denied victory in the Lancashire Road Club 10 clocking 23-21 but went faster on this occasion to win by a minute and 25 seconds.

A close battle behind for second saw Emma Houterman (North Lancashire Road Club) clock 24-00 which was just five seconds faster than Lindsey Styler (Croston Velo) 24-05.

In the juvenile girls’ event another record was broken with Evelyn Field (Liverpool Century Cycling Academy) clocking 25-08.
