David Fellows (Solihull CC) and Alison Dockney (Market Drayton Cycling Club) proved their mettle over a tough course as they battled to the men’s and women’s victories at the Fibrax Wrexham RC Hilly event over 32 miles.

Fellows, from Sheldon in Birmingham, tackled the course, including two ascents of the Horseshoe Pass Mountain, in a time of one hour, 17 minutes and 28 seconds.

It was the 28-year-olds third victory of the season as he prepares for the National Hill Climb Championships next month.

The D32/1 course is one to test even the strongest of riders starting from outside Llangollen and heading straight up the Horseshoe Pass Mountain before descending down the A525 towards Ruthin.

Turning at Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd riders then join the A494 which includes short and sharp climbs to zap legs heading through Gwyddelwern and then turning onto the A5104 before turning back onto the Horseshoe Pass Mountain with the finish at the top.

Fellows has also won the Banbury Star Hardriders 23.5 and Common Lane Occasionals 12 this season and added this to his collection clocking an average speed of over 24.7 miles per hour despite the tough terrain.

Toby Williams (Velotik Racing Team) led the chase behind over three minutes behind taking second in 1-20-49 while Matthew Wales (Pirate juice cc) finished third.

Quickest veteran was Mark Jones, of host club Fibrax Wrexham RC, who finished fifth overall in 1-26-48.

Jones finished one place ahead of fastest junior Cai Curtis-Roberts (Rhyl CC) who completed the course in 1-28-34.

In the women’s event Dockney took victory completing the course in one hour, 39 minutes and 36 seconds.

Dockney also won the Shropshire CCA 25 in July and showed her form over the tougher terrain recording an average speed of over 19.2 miles per hour.

Veteran rider Penny Thorn (Port Sunlight Wheelers) finished second in 1-46-01 while fellow veteran Sally Cunliffe (Ruthin Cycling Club / Clwb Seiclo Rhuthun) finished third (1-51-23).
