Lewis Wake

Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles) powered his way to victory and set a new course record in the Barnesbury CC 25-mile time trial near Bedlington, while Joanne Rea (Team Kirkley Cycles was in form to win the women’s event.

25-year-old Wake clocked a new personal best and wiped 15 seconds off the course record on a warm and dry Sunday morning. He claimed top spot with an impressive time of 48:25.

“I’m mega chuffed to take the win in a big field of strong riders,” he said. “Conditions felt really good so I knew it would be a fast day but didn’t anticipate breaking the course record so couldn’t be happier.”

Behind Wake was Finlay Robertson (Derwentside CC) who clocked in at 48:42, while following him was Kris Atkin (Team Kirkley Cycles) who finished in 49:44.

Wake had a previous best of 51:44 coming into the event, he came into Sunday in good form, having won the North Tyneside Riders 27-mile time trial last weekend.

22-year-old Robertson had participated in five 2021 events prior to this, winning the four most recent ones. As for third placed Atkin, he had finished on the podium in four events this season, winning one of them.

Joanne Rea

In the women’s event 33-year-old Joanne Rea scooped the victory, clocking 56:37 which was a new personal best for her over the 25-mile distance.

“I’m really pleased with my ride,” she said. “I last raced this event in 2019 and just nipped over the hour so I’m delighted with setting a 25-mile personal best.”

She was followed by Ellen Powell (Durham Triathlon Club) who finished the course in 1:01:19 and in third was Claire Harlow (Blaydon CC), she clocked in at 1:01:50.

Rea has had a busy season, since the start of June she had participated in six events leading up to this one, two of those rides coming over 25-miles.

“It was great to have a blast at this distance ahead of the National 25 in a few week’s time,” she added.

30-year-old Powell had participated in three events prior to this one, winning the most recent of those, the North Tyneside Riders 27.

Fastest junior rider was Ellis Murray of Vector Racing (56:28) which gave him a massive PB over the 25 mile
