Emily Martin.

Veteran Richard Oakes (Team Ohten Aveas) took a fourth victory of the season in the Sherwood CC 25, while Emily Martin (Weaver Valley CC) added to her season’s tally by winning the women’s event.

Oakes, from Rutland, placed fifth veteran at last week’s National 25 Mile Championships and was again in top form with the 52-year-old setting an open personal best winning time of 47 minutes and 52 seconds.

The A25/34 saw riders compete on the out and back A46 in Nottinghamshire between Newark on Trent and Stragglethorpe.

A warm by breezy headwind greeted riders on the tougher outward leg including a sharp rise onto the A46 and then a climb out of Bingham before descending to the turn.

Riders did regain lost time with a tailwind on the return leg back to Farndon RAB before facing a cruel last 1.9 miles into a headwind after turning onto Fosse Road for the finish.

Oakes has already won two VTTA London & Home Counties 10 events and the Bolsover and District 10 this season adding to his tally on this occasion.

However, this was his first victory of the season over 25 miles finishing 43 seconds clear of his nearest challenger.

Jack Levick (Rose Race Team) beat Oakes in last week’s National 25 Mile Championships by five seconds after a run of three wins on the bounce.

However, he was unable to repeat that result finishing 43 seconds down on this occasion in 48-35.

Veteran Richard Dean (Rockingham CC) placed third on the day clocking 49-48 ahead of a string of fellow veteran riders.

Meanwhile, in the women’s event Martin continued her winning run making it four victories on the bounce clocking 57-17.

Martin, 31 and from Crowton in Cheshire, has won over a range of distances this season from 10 to 100-mile events.

On this occasion she beat Denise Burrows (AeroCoach) into second (59-46) while veteran Sarah Harrison (Sheffield Triathlon Club) completed the top three positions in 1-00-02.
