Frances Owen

Oliver Peckover and Frances Owen were fastest male and female riders respectively at the Burton and District CA 25-mile time trial near Etwall, Derbyshire, on Saturday.

Recording his second win in two events so far this season Peckover, 22 and from Nottingham, clocked 48-46 to win by nine seconds from Alex Royle (Manchester BC), while Jamieson Blain (Bikestrong KTM) was another four seconds further back in third.

Frances Owen, the 29-year-old Fibrax Wrexham Road Club rider, was quickest female in 54-08. She won comfortably by more than nine minutes from runner-up Sue Cheetham, the 57-year-old North Lancs RC veteran.

This was Peckover’s second win in as many weekends, having taken victory in the VC Long Eaton 10-mile time trial on similar roads the previous weekend where Royle had to settle for second spot.

Peckover’s time is a personal best by 12 seconds, beating the time he set almost three years ago in South Wales on the notoriously fast R25/3H course near Rhigos.

“It felt a very fast day,” said Peckover. “It was supposed to be a cross headwind out, but it didn’t feel like there was any headwind and it was really fast. And it felt like there was no wind on the way back.

“Lockdown has helped my riding. I’ve seen a lot of riders cut back or even stop training, but I’ve found motivation and am even more determined to train hard and do well.”

The BDCA event used the longer A25/11 to last weekend’s VC Long Eaton event, using the A50 all the way to Uttoxeter in Staffordshire before turning for home. Despite some snow at the top end of the course earlier in the day it had cleared by the time the event had begun, and despite cold conditions it was fairly still and there were many smiles as riders returned their numbers.

Ollie Peckover

Peckover will aim to make it three out of three next weekend when he rides the VTTA Notts and East Midlands 10 on Saturday, while he also hopes to take part in the Solihull CC 10 next Sunday.

Owen’s win comes after she placed fifth in a competitive women’s field at last weekend’s Manchester BC 10, and her time in this 25-mile event was a personal best by more than five minutes according to her CTT profile.
