Joanna Patterson (The Independent Pedaler-Nopinz) posted an impressive time to win the women's event, while Alexander Royle (Manchester Bicycle Club) was fastest man by just 12 seconds in the Kent Valley RC 10 on the fast L1015 course at Levens, Cumbria, on Saturday.

Royle, from High Peak in Derbyshire, finished third in the Springfield Financial RT 10 last weekend on the same course but went 40 seconds quicker on this occasion to win in 19 minutes and eight seconds.

The 27-year-old clocked an average speed of over 31.35 miles per hour on his way to winning by just 12 seconds.

The L1015 saw riders start near Levens and descend away from the start on the A590 before turning for home near Lindale and finishing before the rise back to the start.

An unusual wind direction for the course saw riders battle a headwind on the outward leg and receive a tailwind home in warm and muggy conditions.

In a close competition for the top placings 12 riders went under the 20-minute mark out of 105 finishers.

Quickest veteran David Crawley (Velotik Racing Team) pushed the winner all the way but eventually fell 12 seconds short finishing second in 19-20.

A close battle for the final podium position saw Tom Thornely (Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles) clock 19-26 which was a single second faster than Alistair Rutherford (Manchester Bicycle Club).

Jason Bateman (VTTA North Lancs and Lakes Group) was second veteran on scratch in 19-42 while Alan Chorley (Seamons CC) was third in the age category (19-49).

Quickest juvenile was Rhys Edwards (Edinburgh Road Club) who covered the course in 21-21 while para-cyclist Colin Lynch (Shutt Velo Test Team) covered the course in 22-58.

In the women’s event Patterson, from Glasgow, made the trip south worthwhile by setting a new open personal best time of 20-21.

Patterson, aged 32, finished fourth in the National Circuit Championships earlier this month and was a clear winner by a minute and 39 seconds on this occasion.

Emily Martin (Weaver Valley CC) led the chase behind in 22-00 while quickest veteran Karen Bailey (East Lancashire RC) finished third in 23-54.
