Deb Hutson-Lumb

Deb Hutson-Lumb and David Fellows were quickest female and male riders respectively at the Wrekinsport CC charity 18-mile time trial in Shropshire on Saturday.

Hutson Lumb, the 56-year-old Nova Raiders CC rider, beat younger rivals with her time of 47-58, just seven seconds better than runner-up and 2018 winner on this course Emma Sergeant, a fellow veteran with Hafren CC, while third quickest female was Market Drayton CC’s Alison Dockney with 48-17.

Fellows, 29 and from Birmingham, won overall in the colours of Solihull CC with a time of 38-02, which gave him an impressive victory by 3-42 from Tomos Hales (Wrekinsport CC) in 41-44, while junior rider Henri Bedford (Revolutions Racing) was third overall in 42-16.

Hutson-Lumb was also best veteran on standard with +6.26, 22 seconds better than Tim Beardmore (Bridgnorth CC) whose actual time of 42-25 gave him a plus on 6-04 and fourth overall, while Serjeant was third on standard.

This was Fellows’ seventh victory of the season so far, but comes after he showed his versatility at last weekend’s Bolsover and District Cc hill-climb. Prior to that he won the Buxton CC-Sett Valley Cycles’ 33-mile event on October 2, as well as the Leigh Premier RC Rivington climb on September 25.

Next on the cards for Fellows in the Matlock CC two-stage hill-climbs next Sunday, before he tackles the National Hill-Climb Championships on October 31.

Hutson-Lumb was second last year on the same course but has been in great form this season. She has been fastest female in several events this season including the Velotik RT 15 last month, the North Shropshire Wheelers 25, Wrekinsport CC 10 and Nova Raiders 10 in August, as well as second in the VTTA National 10 Championship and third in the VTTA National 25 Championship.

Starting on the B4176 the riders travel west up a few sharp climbs to sap riders’ speed towards Sutton Maddock after 3.6 miles.

Riders then turn towards Bridgnorth on another undulating exposed section with some draggy climbs before making the fast descent down into Bridgnorth. Once into the town riders then climbed the Hermitage Hill with an average gradient of 7.9% and maximum of 11.6%, with a distance of 0.9 kilometres to the top.

From the top riders completed a sharp descent before rolling into the finish.
