Sarah Lewthwaite

Sarah Lewthwaite and Ian Mitchelson were fastest female and male riders respectively at the East Bradford CC 15-mile time trial in North Yorkshire on Sunday morning.

Lewthwaite, the 45-year-old Team Sportslab rider from Leeds, clocked 37-35 for the V221 course near Boroughbridge. That time was good enough for victory by almost four minutes from Claire Jessop (Otley CC), while Sue Spindler (Ravensthorpe CC) was third fastest woman.

And in the men’s event Mitchelson, the 46-year-old from Ripponden, clocked 32-45 to win by 59 seconds from Ben Wimpory (Harrogate Nova CC). Julian Ramsbottom (Team Bottrill) was another 35 seconds back in third.

The event was run off in reasonable conditions, with the rain mostly holding off much to the relief of riders and the many volunteers alike.

A headwind on the way out wasn’t took bad, and the tailwind on the return was welcomed by all.

Fastest tandem was the Ilkley CC pairing of Doug Hart and Jake Unsworth who clocked a speedy 31-26, while Vive le Velo were the team winners.

The event also witnessed a new national veterans age record being broken, with 90-year-old Sydney Wilson (Sheffield Phoenix CC) covering the course in a superb 50-05.

Mitchelson’s victory was his first win of the season, but comes after he placed third in the Vive le Velo 25 in April. He has plenty of time left to add further 2019 victories to his tally, with upcoming event entries including the National 100, the Yorkshire CF 50, the VTTA Yorkshire 50 and the Otley CC 50.

Lewthwaite already has plenty of great results to her name in 2019.

She was victorious in the Sportlab 9.7-mile event back in March, and followed that up with second spot in the City RC 15 a week later.

Victory came her way again in the Otley CC 10 in April, as well as the Vive le Velo 25 the same month, while May saw her finish as fastest female in the Yorkshire CF 10.

She was second in the Kent Valley CC hill-climb, and fourth in round four of the Sigma Sports Classic TT Series before taking another win in this East Bradford CC event.
