Angove and Wilkinson victorious in tough Chippenham 10

Emma Angove

Emma Angove and Felix Wilkinson were fastest female and male riders respectively as Chippenham and District Wheelers staged a 10-mile time trial in Gloucestershire on Saturday morning.

Angove, the 39-year-old who rides for 73 Degrees Bicycles, clocked 25-34 to win by almost two minutes from Sharon Scott (Swindon RC), with Karen Whyte (Veloce) third.

And 22-year-old Wilkinson (Velo Club Montpellier) covered the challenging U41 course in 21-16 – good enough for victory by 20 seconds but not good enough to challenge the course record on a cold and blustery day which saw very few personal bests.

The U41 course actually starts over the border in Wiltshire, taking riders along the spine road north of Ashton Keynes and heading east and over the A419 before tracing the dual carriageway south east to near Cricklade, turning and returning.

The spine road to Cotswold Water Park has recently been resurfaced, but even the improved surface made personal bests hard to come by because of the gusts which caused the cancellation of some events in other areas of the country.

Felix Wilkinson

The last man off, Wilkinson clocked 21-16 to secure his sixth victory on record so far this season, following wins in the Severn Road Club 12.3 in February, the Swindon Road Club and Swindon Wheelers, and Chippenham & District Wheelers 31 and 22-mile events respectively in March, as well as the Gloucester City CC 25 at Easter and the Cheltenham & County CC 22 last weekend.

He will now travel to Wales to compete in the Welsh 25-mile Championship tomorrow on the fast R25/3h course, then next weekend his focus moves on to the Hampshire RC 10 on Saturday before the Sportzmad 25 on Sunday – again on the fast R25/3h course in South Wales.

In other categories, Phil Stonelake (Bristol RC) was top veteran with a time of 22-19 which was eight seconds faster than second-placed Robin Short (Performance Cycles).

And Swindon Road Club won the team prize with a combined time of 1-10-19 set by Peter Garnett, Roy Carless and Pete Scott.
