Barnett and Parkin combine to win Sheffrec 2-up

Team Bottrill Vanguard duo Daniel Barnett and Neal Parkin overcame blustery winds to prevail in the Sheffrec 2-up 25 event at Hatfield Woodhouse in Yorkshire on Saturday.

They clocked a time of 52.29 to take first place out of 11 teams and finished 40 seconds quicker than their nearest rivals.

This makes it two wins on the bounce for Barnett and Parkin – they also won the Bolsover & District CC event on June 9. However, they showed their versatility here, winning over 25 miles as opposed to the 10-mile Bolsover course.

Barnett has also regularly featured on the podium throughout the season with a solo win in the BDCA 10 followed by back-to-back runners-up finishes in the VTTA National Championship and South Pennine RC 25-mile events.

The second placed team was made up of Squadra RT riders Steven Guymer and John Brearley, completing in 53.09.

They were comfortable on the second step of the podium with third-placed UK-Featherflags – TRI Race Team duo Joel Candy and Michael Dodson 3.20 off  their pace in 56.29.

Sheffrec CC’s highest entry, Daryl May and Adam Machan just missed out on the top three with a time of 57.09, placing them fourth.

The event was originally scheduled for the first weekend in March, the same weekend on which it is always run.

However, it was hit by snow this year, forcing organisers to postpone. With 32 teams signed up for the March event, scheduling conflicts meant that many teams were missing, although 11 still lined up on the day.

Held on a dogleg-shaped course, the strong wind was a help in some sections but more often a hindrance.

This was especially true on the second section of the outward leg which saw riders battle against the blast. However, conditions remained dry with the field completing before a torrential downpour that hit the region in the afternoon.
