Mat Ivings (Buxton CC) and Claire Harrison (Vision Racing) were the fastest male and female riders respectively at the Manchester and District TTA 50-mile time trial in Cheshire on Sunday.

Ivings, 45 and from Buxton, covered the J4/9 course near Cranage in 1-49-36 to take the win by just 18 seconds from former 50-mile competition record holder and current 12-hour and 24-hour comp record holder Andy Wilkinson (Port Sunlight Wheelers), while third was Ben Norbury (Congleton CC), another 1-13 off winner’s the pace.

And fastest female was 44-year-old Vision Racing rider Claire Harrison. Her time of 2-09-27 gave her the win by just one second over Naomi Wright (Manchester Tri), while Vision racing took the women’s team prize with Jayne Dickens clocking 2-12-39 for third.

The one-second win for Harrison comes after Wright had beaten her into second place by the same margin in the Macclesfield Wheelers 25 back in April.

The men’s team prize went to Seamons CC using the Bidlake system, with their three riders being Alan Chorley, Adrian Hughes and Dan Mathers. They just held off the challenge of Buxton CC.

54-year-old Wilkinson was the fastest veteran on standard with a plus of 31-55, while the handicap award went to Steven Forest (Tri Central UK) with a time of 1-24-27.

The event used the J4/9 course which takes in almost four laps of a circuit from Cranage over to the fringes of Northwich and loops round to Middlewich before heading back to Cranage.

The event started in sunny conditions with only a light breeze, but the quiet afternoon was abruptly ended by a heavy rain shower and thunder which led to all riders getting a soaking before finishing with the sun having reappeared.

This was Ivings’ first open victory of the season so far, but he has been recording some good riders. He placed sixth in the Anfield BC 100 where he clocked 3-57-07, and clocked a personal best 25-mile time last month of 49-19 in South Wales.

And Harrison’s victory was also her first open win of the season so far, having been second fastest woman in the Manchester DTTA 25 and Dukinfield CC 50 last month as well as second in the Macclesfield Wheelers 25 in April and the MDTTA 10 in March.
