Pat Wright and Angela Carpenter proved victorious as Brighton Mitre CC staged their late-season 25-mile time trial in West Sussex on Sunday morning.

Wright, the 33-year-old from Great Bookham in Surrey, clocked 52.06 to take a comfortable enough victory from team-mate Keith Lea (Paceline RT) who was 2-20 behind, while third spot went to Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) 55.28.

Meanwhile, 48-year-old former runner Angela Carpenter (a3crg) continued a remarkable first season in competitive cycling as she covered the G25/93 course near Steyning  in 59.35 to take the win by 41 seconds from last year’s event winner Ruth Summerford (Eastbourne Rovers CC).

The worst of the previous night’s storms had passed and left a windy but dry day, and although Michael Hutchinson’s course record was never in danger there were some good times recorded for the conditions and the time of year.

Steve Dennis added to his third place with the team prize too as East Grinstead CC’s Mikey Weavers and Christian Yates joined him in a combined 2-54-50.

And Dave Dent (GS Stella) – who won the open event 12 years ago – this time won the road bike prize with a time of 57.36, giving him eighth spot overall.

It was just the latest in a string of victories for prolific Pat Wright, who lists the Sussex CA 25, a3crg 25, Didcot Phoenix 25, North Hampshire 10, Kingston Phoenix 10, Southern Counties CU 25 and Sportzmad CC 10 among his long list of wins for 2017.

And for Carpenter, her previous victories have included wins in the Southdown Velo 28 two weeks ago and the New Forest CC 10 in September.

She was beaten by Summerford on the same course back in July in the Brighton Excelsior 25, but overturned a 13-second deficit to win convincingly this time.
