Andy Cunningham continued his impressive form with another hill-climb victory, this time at the Cestria CC event on Saturday morning, whilst Fiona Burnie was the fastest woman.

There was a competitive field of 53 riders taking on the Peth Bank climb and the All Terrain Cycles rider did not have it all his own way, but still managed to come out on top.

Tim Wilcock (GS Metro) had set the bar at a competitive 4:09 dead but Cunningham, the last rider off, just snuck inside that time by eight tenths of a second to claim yet another victory.

The 28-year-old from Ilkley has won five straight hill-climbs in the month of September, adding Saturday’s triumph to the Glossop Kinder Velo and Halifax Imperial Wheelers double from last weekend.

Cunningham, who also has wins at the Weaver Valley and Border City Wheelers climbs will be hoping this form continues with a pair of two-stage events next weekend in the build up to the National championships.

Espoir Wilcock had to settle for second, whilst teammate and fellow espoir Zeb Kyffin was 2.4 seconds back to complete the podium.

Fiona Burnie, also riding for GS Metro, was the fastest woman on the day, claiming victory and 28th place overall.

Her time of 5:03.6 gave Burnie a comfortable margin of victory, 35 seconds quicker than Gemma Frost (Muckle CC) who finished second.

Burnie was fifth at the national championships in 2016 and will be looking to get into the top positions in three weeks’ time.

The young riders impressed on Saturday morning, four of them breaking into the top twenty.

The pick of these was Gosforth RC’s Daniel Dixon, the 15-year-old clocked 4:32.2 for a ninth-place finish overall, four seconds quicker than Josh Charlton (Hetton Hawks).

Meanwhile, Colin Atkinson (Muckle Cycle Club) was the fastest veteran, taking sixth place in 4:26.8.
