Comfortable wins for Fennell and Pullen

Chris Fennell

Talented espoir Chris Fennell and veteran Charmaine Pullen were the fastest male and female riders respectively after recording sizable victories at Sunday’s VTTA Kent 25.

There were 45 riders that completed the Q25/12 course from Brenzett to Ashford and back, with a climb on the A2070 near Hamstreet to contend with, but that was to prove no match for the victors.

Twenty-one-year-old Fennell (Thanet RC) blitzed the course, stopping the clock in 50.29 for a winning margin of nearly three and a half minutes.

September has continued in much the same vein as the rest of the year for the imperious Fennell, with wins at the Thanet RC 10 and the Kent CA 25 already to his name, emphasising his 2017 dominance in his home county.

At last week’s Kent CA 25, older brother and team-mate Nic Fennell finished second with Neil Lauder (PMR @ Toachim House) nine seconds back in third.

On Sunday there was a reversal in fortunes though, with Lauder getting the better of Nic Fennell by five seconds, the two riders swapping places on the podium.

There was change from last weekend’s women’s winner however, with veteran Charmaine Pullen winning again on Sunday in impressive fashion.

The Adalta Cycling Club rider clocked 1:05.01 for her 25 miles, affording her a winning margin of some six minutes.

Second place went to Tracy Wilkinson-Begg (Folkestone Velo Club) with Rebecca Wilson taking third for Rye & District Wheelers.

Elsewhere, Nick Wilson (Rye & District Whs CC) just missed out on the podium, stopping the clock three seconds slower than the elder Fennell brother in 54.02, but with a =14.50 time, he was the day’s fastest veteran.

Fabien Large was the fastest juvenile on the day, a time of 1:01.59 put him 22nd in the overall standings of 45 finishers, whilst Thanet RC took the team honours, the Fennell brothers joined by seventh placed Huck Garip as quickest trio.
