Matthews and Burgess on form in Norwich ABC 10

Kay Burgess.

Harley Matthews and Kay Burgess were the fastest male and female respectively at the Norwich ABC 10 in Norfolk, with Matthews breaking the old course record on his way to victory.

Matthews, 23 and from Great Yarmouth, clocked 19.56 to take the win by 13 seconds from Matthew Senter (Team Velovelocity), while just one second further off the pace in third was Senter’s team-mate at Velovelocity, Daniel Bloy.

Meanwhile, Kay Burgess (King’s Lynn CC) clocked 25-22 to win the women’s category by just over a minute from Jan Smith (Great Yarmouth CC).

A strong westerly wind helped riders speed to some good times, with the north east facing outward leg along the A143 being longer than the return leg, although some rain showers did give the riders something to worry about.

Harley Matthews.

It was the latest in a string of good performance from Matthews in 2017, and gave him revenge for a loss to Senter on the same course back in April when he was beaten into second by ten seconds.

And more recently, Matthews had to settle for second behind Senter in the VC Baracchi 50 in August, as well as the Diss and District CC 25 where he was half a minute slower than Senter.

Similarly, in the East District 25-mile Championships in June, Senter pipped Matthews by 43 seconds, which all combine to make his win in the Norwich ABC 10 sweeter for Harley!

Burgess’s victory comes after a few other podium places, including second spot in the VC Baracchi 50 in August, as well as third in the King’s Lynn CC 25 in April.

Other highlights from the event include seventh overall for first junior Lucas He with 21-11, while 15-year-old Josh Sykes (Norwich ABC) was top juvenile with 26-45.

In the veterans on standard category, 69-year-old Chris Dyason (Cambridge CC) clocked 22-45 to beat his age standard by 6-07, while runner-up in that category was Ed Dean (Norwich ABC), the 49-year-old clocking 22-22 for a plus of 4-19.

And the team prize went to DAP CC, with Matthews leading the way and being joined in the winning trio by Mark Richards and Liam Gentry, fourth and ninth respectively.
