Mid Devon CC team-mates Conrad Moss and Ruth Burrows battled against tough conditions to clinch victories in the Welsh CA 100.

Moss, 42, from Paignton, also won the event last season in perfect conditions but battled to a winning time of three hours, 39 minutes and 13 seconds on this occasion.

“I was 90 seconds down on last year but the conditions were polar opposites and it was pretty gruesome today,” said Moss.

“I knew despite being in better form than a year ago that I would go nowhere near the course record. I thought a three hour and 39 minutes ride would be strong and take some beating because it was a cross-wind the whole way around the course.

“The wind didn’t give any assistance and you had to work at it the whole time.”

The course used the exposed dual carriageway A40 out-and-back route between Abergavenny and Monmouth which was completed three times.

Veteran Anthony Jones (Towy Racing CC) road into second with a 3:43.59 while first senior Christopher Gibbard (Bynea Cycling Club) finished third in 3:47.34.

Seventeen-year-old Josh Griffiths (Bristol South Cycling Club) finished a respectable fourth in 3:51.17.

Burrows, 33, from Devon, added the victory to that of the Western Time Trials 100 which she won in June clocking a winning time of 4:25.51 on this occasion.

A close battle for second woman saw team-mates Kirsty Murray and Celia Boothman battle it out with Murray finishing in 4:36.35 and Boothman clocking 4:37.11.
