Anna Turvey and Richard Bickley were the respective winners in the women’s and men’s competitions as the Border City Wheelers hosted their 10-mile event in Cumbria on Saturday.

A mixed field of riders aging from 14 to 72 years old took to the course on the A685, starting and ending at Newbiggin on Lune in the North of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Of the 49 finishers, it was 37-year-old Anna Turvey who put in another standout performance to claim the women’s prize.

The Tyneside Vagabonds rider stopped the clock in 21.28, which not only gave her victorying the women’s competition, but an impressive fourth place in the overall standings.

Turvey’s time was some three minutes ahead of her nearest challenger, 35-year-old Nikola Matthews of Halifax Imperial Wheelers.

It has been a strong year across all distances for the Newcastle based Turvey, with victories at the Darlington CC 50, the Drighlington BC 10 and a podium finish at the National 25-mile Championship to her name.

There was success for hosting club Border City Wheelers as their man Richard Bickley powered to victory in the overall standings.

Richard Bickley.

The 34-year-old clocked a time of 20.13, giving him a margin of 36 seconds over Dan Taylor (Birdwell Wheelers) and 53 seconds over first veteran John Morgan (Coveryourcar.co.uk) who completed the podium in second and third respectively.

Bickley has rarely been outside the top three in open time trials in 2017, adding this win to triumphs at the Beacon Wheelers 10 and the Blackburn and District CTC 11 in the last two months.

Elsewhere there was a top 10 finish for espoir Morgan Anderson (Pro Vision Cycle Clothing) who finished sixth, whilst 14-year-old Archie Irving was the first juvenile, a time of 22.36 giving the Beacon Wheelers youngster a creditable 16th place overall.
