Former multiple national champion Matt Bottrill showed he still has some power in his legs as he stormed to victory in the Leicester Forest CC 10-mile time trial in Leicestershire on Saturday.

The 40-year-old from nearby Coalville – riding for his own Team Bottrill-HSS Hire outfit - clocked 19.38 to take the win by 34 seconds from team-mate and pupil James Perkins (Team Bottrill), while they completed a 1-2-3 with David Langlands (Team Bottrill) third, just one second further back.

And in a close finish, Race Hub riders Leon Wright and Kurt Bergin-Taylor took fourth and fifth places, Wright being just a second behind Langlands, while Bergin-Taylor was only three seconds further back.

And in the women’s event, Wendy Gooding (Team Bottrill-HSS Hire) continued the good form for Team Bottrill with a win, clocking 23-38 to take victory in that category by eight seconds from Clay Cross RT rival Francesca Hall, with Claire Shea-Simmonds (Race Hub) third fastest female with 24-13.

The A10/11 course begins just off the A46, then after joining that road it heads north to the Dalby interchange, where it loops back round and rejoins at Six Hills, heading south to a finish on the A46 just beyond Seagrave, west of Thrussington.

Previously a prolific winner of time trials, Matt Bottrill retired from the sport to focus on coaching, but has been trying his hand at triathlon recently.

Consequently he has only ridden five open time trials in 2017, and this is his first victory.

In July he was second in the Cheshire Roads Club 50-mile event, while he was also runner-up in the Sherwood CC 10. In June he was part of the trio which placed third in the National Team Time Trial Championships in Yorkshire, and formed part of the Team Bottrill quartet which was second in the Hinckley CRC 4-up 25 in May.

Veteran Gooding, from Oundle in Northamptonshire, last tasted victory just two weeks ago when she won the Chronos RT 10.

She was also fastest female in the Melton Olympic 25 the weekend before her Chronos win, as well as being fastest female in the Fenland Clarion 25, Peterborough CC 10 and VTTA East Anglia 10 earlier in the season.
