Veteran Stephen Irwin claimed victory in an event record time at the Kent Valley RC 25 in Cumbria on Sunday.

Conditions were perfect for the record to tumble and the 46-year-old from Burnley duly obliged, blitzing the course as the only competitor to go under 50 minutes.

Irwin (North Lancs RC) stopped the clock in 49.54, to give himself a winning margin of over two and a half minutes.

Irwin has had a good year and is yet to place outside the top five, adding this victory to success at the North Lancashire RC 10 and the VTTA national championships 15 mile events in April.

Second place went to Philip Jones (Bella In Sella) whilst Archie Irving of Beacon Wheelers completed the top three, five minutes further back.

It was a good day for North Lancs RC, as they also claimed the women’s competition, that honour going to Sue Cheetham from Blackburn.

Cheetham was second woman at the Chorley Cycling Club 10 last month but claimed top spot on Sunday completing the 25-mile course in 1:02.12.

Result:

1. Stephen Irwin (North Lancs RC)    49.54

2. Philip Jones (Bella In Sella)            52.17

3. Archie Irving (Beacon Wheelers)   57.13

Woman: Sue Cheetham (North Lancs RC)    1:02.12
