John Dewey and Kate Allan broke the men’s and women’s course records respectively, as they powered to victory in the Charlotteville CC 50-mile time trial in Surrey on Sunday.

Dewey (Team Bottrill/HSS Hire) took three minutes and 37 seconds off Michael Hutchinson’s course record, while Allan beat Julia Shaw’s old women’s record by 39 seconds.

Dewey, from Dorking in Surrey, clocked a time of one hour, 37 minutes and 51 seconds, enough for victory by almost two minutes in his first 50-mile event of the season.

“I’m really delighted with the win and the time in what was a good field,” said Dewey.

“It was my first 50 of the year so it was nice to get a good result and it bodes well for getting towards the middle of the season.

“It didn’t feel particularly fast today and was chilly to start with but warmed up, there was a lot of traffic and it wasn’t a bad day.

“The course has a few lumps and a really terrible road surface which is bone shaking. So I’m pleased with that time on that course.

“June will be a busy month Nationally for me with quite a lot going on including the team time-trial, 50, 100 and maybe the circuit championships.

“I need to decide what I am aiming for nationally.”

Tim Cartwright (Newbury RC) finished second on the day in a personal best time of 1:39.49, which would have also broken the course record.

Third place went to Pat Wright (Paceline RT) riding his first 50-mile event and finished in 1:41.31.

In the women’s event Kate Allen (Drag2Zero) took the women’s course record winning in a time of 1:51.03, taking 19 seconds off the existing record held by Julia Shaw.

Allen was beaten into second last weekend in the Welsh CA 25 but was a clear winner on this occasion.

She beat team-mate Alice Lethbridge into second in 1:55.27, while Elise Sherwell (Blazing Saddles) finished third in 1:58.47.
