Murray and Rimmer power to victory in Bishop Auckland TT

Veteran Keith Murray (Drag2zero) and junior Alex Rimmer (Mountain Goat Coaching) both secured convincing victories as Bishop Auckland CC staged a 32-mile sporting time trial in County Durham on Sunday.

Murray, 42 and from Darlington, clocked 1:15:52 to win by 4-37 from Glen Turnbull (Patron), while Rimmer took victory in the women’s category with a time of 1:36:20, beating second-placed woman and team-mate Louise Hamilton by 6-26.

For Murray, it was almost a repeat of the time he did in the same Bishop Auckland CC event ten years ago, when he was just ten seconds fastest, albeit on a course with a slightly different start and finish point.

“It’s a great event,” said Murray. “In 32 miles there’s 2,200 feet of climbing on two laps of a 16-mile circuit, so it’s the ultimate test – brutal but fair!

“In places I was doing about 50mph, and in other places only seven mph, so it’s very varied!

“The first lap was wet, cold and miserable, but the sun came out and it was enjoyable for the second lap. I was pleased with my time – I wanted to win by five minutes, and although I was just short of that I was still pleased with my time.”

It was win number two for the 2017 season for Murray, who won the Cleveland Wheelers sporting 21 last month, and has finished second in both the Barnesbury CC 21 and Teesdale CC sporting 21 over the last couple of weeks.

In the women’s event Rimmer made it two wins out of two this season, having also won the women’s prize at Teesdale CRC’s sporting 21 last weekend.

Rimmer is lined up to ride the Kent Valley Road Club 30-mile event next Sunday, while Murray heads down south to ride the West Kent Road Club 10 on Saturday followed by the Sydenham Wheelers 25 on Sunday.
