Gullen breaks course record in Circuit of Ingleborough
James Gullen (JLT Condor) sliced more than a minute and a half from the course record as he powered to victory in the Circuit of Ingleborough, staged in North Yorkshire by the Pendle Forest CC on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Yorkshireman, who now lives in Lancaster, clocked 59.21 to win on the day by more than three and a half minutes from Tom Rigby (Springfield Financial RT), while last year’s runner-up Richard Bideau of the promoting club had to settle for third this time, just seven seconds behind Rigby.
Fastest female was Steph Mottram (Cliff Pratt Racing) who clocked 1:16:10, beating 2016 winner Claire Swoboda (Chorlton Velo) by 1-09, while Charlotte Gorman (Team Lusso) was just three seconds slower in third place.
It was a cool day with a light breeze and patchy mizzle, but not bad conditions for the time of year. Gullen made light work of the slight rain, and became the first rider to go under the hour mark as he broken Tejvan Pettinger’s old course record by 1-31.
Gullen – who is part of the reigning National Team Time Trial Championship trio and also placed second in the National 10-mile Championship in 2016 – also won the special prize offered by the Pendle Forest CC for being the first rider ever to go under the hour for the sporting 27-mile course.
In other categories, Tom Roper (Beacon Wheelers) was the fastest junior with 1:08:45, while Archie Irving, his 14-year-old team-mate at Beacon Wheelers, was the fastest youth rider with a remarkable 1:10:32.
And Barrow Central Wheelers narrowly pipped last year’s winners Pendle Forest CC to the team prize by just 17 seconds, the winning trio being Kieran Lacey, Darren Brackwell and Richard Helm.
