Matt Langworthy (Mid-Devon CC) came within seven seconds of the course record as he took a comfortable win in the City Cycle Couriers 10-mile time trial in Devon on Sunday.

The 20-year-old from near Newton Abbot clocked 19.19 for the S4/10 course near Buckfastleigh, narrowly missing out on the course record set last year by Dean Robson of 19.12.

“It’s a local course for me, so I knew where I needed to go hard,” said Langworthy, who is studying Geology at Imperial College London. “Because it’s early season I wasn’t sure how I was going, but I felt I rode well in the Kingston Wheelers event the week before.

“The conditions were good so I was aiming for a long 19. I had the course record with a 19.37 until Dean beat that last year, but I knew it would take some beating.”

Langworthy was fastest by 1-22 from over-40 veteran team-mate Ian Cullen, while St Austell Wheelers’ Gary Fouacres clocked 20.54 to take third and was also fastest over-50 veteran.

Junior ace Harrison Wood clocked 21.18 to clinch fifth spot, and help Mid-Devon CC get three riders into the top five.

Langworthy is targeting the BUCS National 10 and 25 in April, while away from time trialling he is riding the Primavera Road Race next week and the Severn Bridge Road Race too.
