Rowan Brackston (Imperial College CC) stormed Butts Lane to win the inaugural Velopace hill climb.

Along the way, he established the new course record for the brand new GH/96 course, clocking 3.38.9 on the 1.18km, 10.3 per cent average gradient climb.

Hill climbing legend Bill Bell (Bigfoot CC) was close behind, recording 3.42.4 for second place, while local climbing hero Peter Tadros (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) put in a 3.49.0 ride to claim third spot.

Fastest woman Joscelin Lowden (Lewes Wanderers CC) was 12th overall and far ahead of her nearest rival, putting in a stunning 4.35.2 climb. Ruth Summerford (Velopace) was second with 5.15.7, while team mate Olivia Webb was third, a further eleven seconds back with 5.26.4.

Seventeen-year-old Nick Martin (East Grinstead CC) was fastest Junior with 4.07.6, which was good enough to put him 7th overall, while Zachary Farnes (Velopace) took second spot with 5.38.3.

Peter Tadros’s 14-year-old son Theo was eighth overall and fastest Juvenile with an incredible 4.23.1. James Gilmore (Preston Park Youth CC) was second in the age category, narrowly beating club mate Francis Schofield by tenths of a second with times in the region of 5.34.

Meanwhile in the veteran age groups, Matthew Woods (Eastbourne Rovers CC) was fastest 41-50 year old with 4.31.0, Paul East (Reading CC) recorded 4.46.7 for the 51-60 age group and 61+ winner was Jon Rodgers (Steyning Athletic Club), clocking 6.03.6.

The fastest team award went to local club Eastbourne Rovers CC, composed of Matt Woods, David Clark and Bob Humphrey.
