James Gullen smashed his own record on the V415 course in Burton Fleming on Saturday. The Pedal Heaven rider set the standard in 2013, stopping the clock at 21.00 but beat this time by 17 seconds in far from ideal conditions.

After finishing second in the National 10-mile Championship last week, Gullen was on top form here, winning in 20.43.

A potential star of the future finished second with 15-year-old Cavan Walker (Acre RT) stopping the clock in 22.52. James Rix of Crawley Wheelers came third, just one second behind the teenager in 22.53. Andy Askwith (Bridlington CC) finished fifth overall in 23.29 and was top veteran on standard.

Joanne Burnett (VC Beverley) topped the women’s category with a time of 27.54 with junior rider Hannah Bayes (Scarborough Paragon) second in 29.06.

This was the final counting event for Yorkshire Cycling Federation SPOCO points series and the tough triangular course attracted 50 riders. However, Alistair Wareham, who didn’t ride here, had already done enough to win the series.

Despite showers drenching the course and the wind blowing the wrong way for good rides, there were only a handful of non-starters.
